Target Information
Equine metalloprotease inhibitor 3 (TIMP-3) is a protein that plays a critical role in regulating the activity of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), which are enzymes involved in the breakdown of extracellular matrix in normal physiological processes such as tissue remodeling and wound healing. TIMP-3 specifically inhibits the catalytic activity of MMPs by binding to their active site, thereby preventing uncontrolled degradation of the extracellular matrix. It also facilitates the binding of target MMPs to the endocytic receptor LRP-1, promoting the scavenging of MMPs and maintaining the balance between matrix degradation and deposition, which is essential for preventing pathologies such as arthritis, cancer, and cardiovascular disorders .
