Chicken Proteasome Subunit Beta Type-5 (PSMB5) is a key component of the 20S proteasome complex, which is involved in the proteolytic degradation of most intracellular proteins. This subunit is essential for the assembly and function of the proteasome, which plays a crucial role in maintaining protein homeostasis by removing misfolded or damaged proteins that could impair cellular functions. PSMB5 exhibits chymotrypsin-like activity, allowing it to cleave peptides after large hydrophobic residues. In chickens, PSMB5 is highly conserved and shares significant sequence similarity with its mammalian counterparts.
