Target Information
VP7 is the major structural protein forming the outer layer of the BTV core, organized into 260 homotrimers that shroud the VP3 subcore. It contains a prominent RGD motif (Arg-Gly-Asp) essential for viral attachment to Culicoides vector cells via integrin receptors. As a highly conserved group-specific antigen, VP7 is the primary target for diagnostic serology, including competitive ELISAs used to detect BTV exposure across all serotypes. Its role in stabilizing the core and facilitating vector-mediated transmission makes it a critical focus for surveillance and subunit vaccine research.
