Target Information
The pr peptide is the N-terminal part of the premembrane (prM) protein, which acts as a chaperone to prevent the premature fusion of the envelope (E) protein during virus maturation. As the immature virion moves through the acidic trans-Golgi network, the prM protein is cleaved by the cellular protease furin into the M protein and the pr peptide. The pr peptide remains associated with the virion until it reaches the extracellular neutral pH environment, where it dissociates to render the virus fully infectious.
