Rat TOP1MT is a mitochondria-localized nucleic acid regulatory protein with conserved catalytic and DNA-binding domains that preserve stable protein conformation under physiological conditions. It presents in all cells with active mitochondrial genome replication and forms transient complexes bound to mitochondrial DNA strands. Its organelle-specific genome-modulating structure and widespread metabolic cell distribution separate it from secreted cytokines, plasma membrane transporters and nuclear transcriptional regulators with streamlined single-domain assemblies limited to non-mitochondrial compartments.
