Rat MTIF2 is a mitochondria-resident translational factor with conserved ribosome and initiator tRNA binding domains that retain stable protein conformation under physiological conditions. It is abundant in cells with robust oxidative metabolism and forms transient complexes with mitochondrial ribosomal subunits inside the organelle matrix. Its organelle-specific protein synthesis regulatory structure and broad metabolic cell distribution set it apart from secreted cytokines, plasma membrane transporters and nuclear transcriptional factors with simplified single-domain assemblies limited to non-mitochondrial compartments.
