Target Information

Rat haptoglobin (Hp) is a secreted glycoprotein of the globin-binding protein family, a key regulator of hemoglobin clearance and iron homeostasis. It features conserved N-terminal α-subunits and C-terminal β-subunits linked by disulfide bonds, a hemoglobin-binding domain, and structural motifs critical for ligand interaction and stability. It localizes to rat plasma and extracellular fluids, with high expression in hepatocytes and negligible levels in non-hepatic tissues. The protein mediates hemoglobin-haptoglobin complex formation and macrophage uptake, with conserved binding sites for hemoglobin and CD163 receptors. Rat Hp shares core functional domains with mammalian orthologs, and has distinct binding affinity differentiating it from other plasma glycoproteins.
