Rat BMP8A is a secreted transforming growth factor superfamily polypeptide with conserved cysteine-knot functional domains that sustain stable molecular conformation under physiological conditions. It is secreted into extracellular matrix by gonadal and osteogenic cell populations. Its soluble matrix-associated structure and tissue-specific expression separate it from transmembrane receptors, cytoplasmic scaffolding adaptors and intranuclear transcriptional regulators with streamlined single-domain assemblies and static single-compartment subcellular localization profiles.
