Rat COL2 is a major secreted fibrillar extracellular matrix protein built with repeated glycine-rich triple-helix domains that sustain stable protein conformation under physiological conditions. It is predominantly produced by chondrocyte populations within cartilaginous tissues and forms core structural fibrils of joint matrices. Its cartilage-specific fibrous structural framework and mesenchymal tissue-restricted expression differentiate it from cell-surface transmembrane receptors, cytoplasmic signaling adaptors and intranuclear transcriptional regulators with streamlined single-domain assemblies and static single-compartment subcellular localization profiles.
