Target Information
Mouse transition protein 1 (TNP1) is a 54-residue, arginine- and cysteine-rich chromatin condensing factor expressed exclusively in post-meiotic round spermatids. The peptide replaces histones transiently between histone removal and protamine deposition, using its numerous positively charged residues to neutralize DNA phosphate groups while intra- and inter-molecular disulfide bonds stabilize the condensed fiber. The protein is synthesized as a 6.2 kDa precursor that undergoes proteolytic trimming of a short N-terminal leader during epididymal transit. Antibodies raised against full-length recombinant mouse TNP1 recognize both the precursor and processed forms with negligible cross-reactivity to protamines or transition protein 2, enabling specific immunoblot and immunohistochemical detection in testicular homogenates and epididymal sections.
