Target Information

Vesicular glutamate transporter 1 (VGLUT1) is a versatile transporter that moves L-glutamate and various ions, including chloride, proton, potassium, sodium, and phosphate. Within the synaptic vesicle membrane, its primary function is as an uniporter, preferentially transporting L-glutamate, but also phosphate, from the cytoplasm into synaptic vesicles at the presynaptic nerve terminals of excitatory neural cells. In the hippocampus, mice lacking VGLUT1 exhibit a marked reduction in learning and memory capabilities, indicating that VGLUT1 is crucial for synaptic long-term potentiation (LTP) and spatial reversal learning.
