Target Information
Midkine is a secreted protein that acts as both a cytokine and a growth factor, transmitting its signals through cell-surface proteoglycan and non-proteoglycan receptors. It binds to cell-surface proteoglycan receptors via their chondroitin sulfate (CS) groups, thereby regulating various processes such as inflammatory response, cell proliferation, adhesion, growth, survival, tissue regeneration, differentiation, and migration. In mice, Midkine plays a role in neural and embryonic development, inflammatory responses, tumorigenesis, cardiovascular diseases, and normal reproductive system function. In the cardiovascular realm, Midkine protects mouse embryonic stem cells from hypoxic damage by activating the Akt and HIF-1α signaling pathways and is involved in the proliferation, apoptosis, and differentiation of cardiomyocytes.
