Target Information
Arginase-1 is an essential component of the urea cycle, responsible for converting L-arginine into urea and L-ornithine. L-ornithine is then metabolized into proline and polyamines, which are vital for collagen synthesis and bioenergetic pathways crucial for cell proliferation. The urea cycle primarily occurs in the liver and, to a lesser extent, in the kidneys. In mice, Arginase-1 plays roles in immune regulation, inflammatory response, and tissue repair. Its expression in macrophages is closely linked to the immune response. Research has demonstrated that Arginase-1 specifically expressed by macrophages can inhibit fibrosis and inflammatory responses driven by Th2 cytokines. For instance, in mice infected with the Th2-inducing pathogen Schistosoma mansoni, Arginase-1-positive macrophages helped reduce liver fibrosis and portal hypertension by suppressing the production of proinflammatory cytokines.
