Target Information
Prenylcysteine oxidase 1 (PCYOX1) is an enzyme that cleaves the thioether bond of prenyl-L-cysteines, such as farnesylcysteine and geranylgeranylcysteine. It is specifically active against free prenylcysteines and does not target prenylcysteine residues within prenylated proteins or peptides. In mice, PCYOX1 plays significant roles in thrombosis, the progression of atherosclerosis, adipogenesis, and the regulation of lipid metabolism. Regarding platelet function, Pcyox1−/− mice exhibit reduced platelet aggregation ability, including decreased release of α-granules and αIIbβ3 integrin activation. Furthermore, while Pcyox1−/− mice maintain normal plasma fibrinogen levels, their impaired platelet function leads to reduced whole blood coagulation activity, underscoring the crucial role of PCYOX1 in thrombosis.
