Target Information
Protein kinase C delta type (PKCδ) is a serine/threonine-protein kinase that operates independently of calcium but depends on phospholipids and diacylglycerol (DAG). It has dual roles in regulating cell death and survival, acting as a pro-apoptotic protein during DNA damage-induced apoptosis, yet serving as an anti-apoptotic protein during cytokine receptor-initiated cell death. PKCδ is involved in tumor suppression, essential for oxygen radical production by NADPH oxidase, and acts as a regulator in platelet functional responses, either positively or negatively. In mice, PKCδ is crucial for embryonic development. Research has shown that the deletion of both PKCδ and PKCε genes results in lethal embryonic defects around day 9.5, with abnormalities such as endothelial cell disorganization, reduced vascular branching, and decreased contact with endothelial cells. Furthermore, PKCδ is vital for vascular smooth muscle cell differentiation. In mouse embryos lacking PKCδ, α-smooth muscle actin is nearly absent, demonstrating PKCδ's significant role in angiogenesis and structural formation.
