Target Information
Pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF), also known as serpin F1 (SERPINF1), is a multifunctional secreted protein with anti-angiogenic, anti-tumorigenic, and neurotrophic properties. PEDF inhibits endothelial cell migration and suppresses both retinal neovascularization and endothelial cell proliferation. PEDF is highly expressed in the retinal pigment epithelium and plays a role in maintaining retinal health. Studies have shown that PEDF is expressed in the lungs, and that it has an effect on lung fibroblasts. Because Guinea pigs are used in respiratory research, PEDF may be relevant.
