Target Information
Gossypol is a naturally occurring polyphenolic compound produced by pigment glands in cotton plants (Gossypium spp.). It acts as a natural defense mechanism against pests. Animal-derived food safety concerns arise because cottonseed meal is widely used as a high-protein feed ingredient for livestock. While ruminants (like mature cattle) can tolerate moderate amounts of gossypol because it binds to soluble proteins in the rumen, monogastric animals (such as swine, poultry, and pre-ruminant calves) are highly susceptible to gossypol poisoning. In its "free" (unbound) form, gossypol is toxic, causing cardiac failure, hepatotoxicity, respiratory distress, and severe reproductive issues (such as impaired spermatogenesis).
