In Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B Streptococcus), the GBS Protein usually refers to the Alpha-like Protein (Alp) family, which includes the prototype Alpha C protein, Rib, and Alp1-4. These surface-anchored chimeras are characterized by tandem repeat structures that mediate host cell adherence and invasion of epithelial cells. They play a vital role in escaping host immunity and are highly immunogenic. Because they are broadly conserved across different serotypes, they are leading candidates for universal protein-based vaccines against neonatal sepsis and meningitis.
