Target Information
Bluetongue Virus (BTV) is a non-enveloped, double-stranded RNA virus belonging to the genus Orbivirus within the Sedoreoviridae family. It is an arthropod-borne pathogen transmitted primarily by Culicoides biting midges, causing severe vascular injury, hemorrhage, and characteristic tongue cyanosis in ruminants, particularly sheep. The viral capsid consists of an outer shell formed by structural proteins VP2 and VP5, which dictate serotype specificity and receptor binding, and an inner core dominated by VP7, a highly conserved antigen widely targeted in diagnostic ELISA assays.
