Interleukin 2 is encoded by the IL2 gene in goats. IL2 levels are critical for the fate of both Tregs and Teffs and IL2 could be thought to provide a homeostatic control of immune responses in vivo. IL-2 is essential for establishing cellular immune memory and recognizing self-antigens and foreign antigens. In medicine, IL-2 has been used as a therapy for certain cancers, including renal cell carcinoma and melanoma.
