Target Information

Lysozymes are key components of the innate immune system, providing non-specific defense against bacterial infections. They are particularly crucial for fish, which have a less developed specific immune response and thus rely more heavily on innate immunity. Because of this importance, lysozyme levels or activity are frequently used as an indicator of a fish's innate immune status. Lysozymes are widely distributed throughout the natural world. Lysozyme not only has a direct antimicrobial function, but also enhances the immune response by activating the complement system and phagocytes. For example, in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), the expression of lysozyme was induced by β-glucan and bacterial lipopolysaccharide, suggesting that lysozyme may be involved in the immune response through the regulation of immunostimulatory factors.
