Lens fiber major intrinsic protein is the major structural protein of the lens, forming tightly packed fibers that maintain lens transparency and refractive index, and it is crucial for focusing light onto the retina. It is encoded by the bovine MIP gene. The predicted structure for MIP suggests that it crosses the lipid bilayer six times, with both carboxy and amino termini on the cytoplasmic side.
