Target Information
Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), also known as scatter factor (SF), is a paracrine cellular growth factor that promotes cell motility and morphogenesis. Secreted by mesenchymal cells, it predominantly targets epithelial and endothelial cells, but it also acts on hematopoietic progenitor cells and T cells. HGF plays a pivotal role in embryonic organ development, particularly in myogenesis, as well as in adult organ regeneration and wound healing. The functions of HGF in fish are mainly focused on the development of appendicular muscles and the regulation of neuronal activities. These functions suggest that HGF not only plays an important role in the normal development of fish, but may also have potential applications in disease modeling and tissue repair studies.
