Target Information
Mouse Calcitonin (Calca) is a peptide hormone primarily produced by parafollicular cells (C cells) of the thyroid gland. It plays a critical role in calcium homeostasis by reducing blood calcium levels. Calca achieves this by inhibiting osteoclast activity, thereby decreasing bone resorption, and enhancing renal calcium excretion. In mouse models, Calca has been shown to protect against hypercalcemia by suppressing osteoclast activity and preventing excessive bone resorption. Additionally, Calca is involved in lactation, where it helps maintain calcium homeostasis and protects maternal bone integrity. Calca also has vasodilatory effects and plays a role in pain transmission through its related peptide, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP). Its dysregulation has been implicated in various conditions, including bone disorders and metabolic imbalances.
