Target Information
Guinea pig Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) plays a crucial role in the survival and maintenance of spiral ganglion cells (SGCs) in the auditory system. BDNF acts through the TrkB receptor, promoting SGC survival and function even after hair cell loss. It is also involved in the development and maintenance of cochlear neurons, with studies showing that BDNF treatment can prevent SGC degeneration in deafened animals. Additionally, BDNF has been explored for its potential in improving neural responsiveness and cochlear health, although its effects on hair cells and supporting cells in the organ of Corti remain limited.
