Target Information
In chickens, superoxide dismutase [Cu-Zn] (SOD1) is a key antioxidant enzyme responsible for catalyzing the dismutation of superoxide anions (O₂⁻) into oxygen (O₂) and hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), thereby protecting cells from reactive oxygen species (ROS) damage. SOD1 is widely expressed in the cytoplasm and is the primary scavenger of superoxide in cells. Additionally, SOD1 is involved in regulating the cellular redox balance, which is crucial for maintaining normal cellular functions. In the nervous system, SOD1 is particularly abundant and plays an essential protective role. Mutations in the SOD1 gene are associated with several diseases, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), further emphasizing its importance in cellular physiology.
