Target Information

Rat Thyroxine Binding Globulin (TBG) is a key serum transport protein for thyroid hormones, primarily synthesized in the liver. It belongs to the serpin family and has a high affinity for thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), with T4 binding more strongly. TBG maintains a large extrathyroidal pool of thyroid hormones, safeguarding against abrupt fluctuations in hormone levels. It also protects against iodine wastage by limiting urinary loss of thyroid hormones. TBG is cleared by the liver, and its denatured form can be detected by antibodies specific to its primary structure.
