Target Information

Rat metallothionein 1 (MT-1) is a 61-residue, cysteine-rich (20 Cys) protein that folds into two metal-thiolate clusters binding up to seven zinc or cadmium ions. The polypeptide lacks aromatic amino acids and adopts a dumbbell structure with separate four- and three-metal domains connected by a conserved Lys-Lys hinge. Constitutively expressed in liver, kidney and duodenum, MT-1 localizes to cytosol and nucleus, buffering intracellular zinc and scavenging free radicals. Antibodies raised against recombinant rat MT-1 detect native, metal-bound and apo-forms with negligible cross-reactivity to MT-2 or MT-3, enabling selective immunoblot and immunohistochemical visualization in rat tissue homogenates and sections.
