Mouse Surfactant Protein B (SP-B) is a hydrophobic, 79-amino-acid peptide essential for alveolar stability. Synthesized in type II pneumocytes, it inserts into surfactant phospholipid films, lowering surface tension to prevent alveolar collapse during respiration. SP-B deficiency disrupts surfactant structure, leading to respiratory distress and neonatal lethality. As a critical component of pulmonary surfactant, SP-B is a key target for studies of lung function, development, and surfactant-related disorders.
