Target Information
Mouse SOD1 is a soluble cytoplasmic enzyme that binds copper and zinc ions, acting as a homodimer to convert superoxide radicals (O₂⁻) into molecular oxygen (O₂) and hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂). This enzyme plays a crucial role in scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) and maintaining cellular redox balance. SOD1 is also involved in axonal transport, regulation of inflammatory responses, and phagocytosis. Mutations in the SOD1 gene are associated with familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), highlighting its importance in neurodegenerative diseases.
