Target Information
Malondialdehyde (MDA) is a three-carbon dialdehyde generated during lipid peroxidation when reactive oxygen species cleave arachidonic and other polyunsaturated fatty acids. Its two aldehyde groups are separated by a conjugated double bond, creating a highly reactive electrophile that readily forms Schiff bases with lysine residues and thiobarbituric acid adducts. The low-molecular-weight molecule diffuses freely through membranes and circulates bound to albumin and other proteins. Antibodies raised against malondialdehyde-modified protein conjugates detect both free MDA and protein-bound adducts with minimal cross-reactivity to related aldehydes such as 4-hydroxynonenal, enabling direct measurement of lipid peroxidation products in tissues and biological fluids.
