Target Information

Cortisone is a 21-carbon glucocorticoid characterized by an 11-keto group that distinguishes it from its reversible reduction product cortisol. Synthesized in the adrenal zona fasciculata through 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2 oxidation of cortisol, the steroid circulates bound to corticosteroid-binding globulin and albumin. Its planar Δ4-3-one A-ring and polar dihydroxyacetone side chain confer low intrinsic glucocorticoid activity, yet serve as a metabolic reservoir for rapid cortisol regeneration in target tissues. Antibodies generated against cortisone-carrier conjugates exhibit high specificity over cortisol, corticosterone and related pregnanes, enabling direct measurement of the 11-oxo steroid in serum, urine and tissue matrices.
