Target Information

Histone-lysine N-methyltransferase PRDM16 binds to DNA and acts as a transcriptional regulator. It is crucial in the differentiation of brown adipose tissue (BAT), which is specialized in dissipating chemical energy as heat in response to cold or overfeeding. In contrast, white adipose tissue (WAT) specializes in storing excess energy and controlling systemic metabolism. PRDM16 plays an essential role in maintaining energy balance and metabolic health in mice by regulating adipocyte differentiation, energy metabolism, and heat production. Loss of PRDM16 results in impaired brown adipose tissue function, leading to obesity, insulin resistance, and reduced regulation of body temperature.
