Target Information
Streptomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that targets the 30S subunit of bacterial ribosomes. It binds to the S12 protein and 16S rRNA, disrupting protein synthesis by causing misreading of mRNA and inhibiting the release of the initiation complex. This interference leads to the production of nonfunctional proteins and ultimately bacterial cell death. Streptomycin is particularly effective against Mycobacterium tuberculosis and various Gram-negative bacteria. Its unique binding site and mechanism make it a relevant target for antibody development to enhance its activity and improve treatment outcomes in bacterial infections.
