Neomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that targets the 30S subunit of bacterial ribosomes. It binds to the 16S rRNA, disrupting protein synthesis by causing misreading of the mRNA code and inhibiting the release of the initiation complex. This leads to the production of nonfunctional proteins and ultimately bacterial cell death. Neomycin is effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including Enterobacteriaceae and Staphylococcus species.
