Polymyxin B is an antibiotic that targets the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) component of the outer membrane in Gram-negative bacteria. It binds to the lipid A portion of LPS, disrupting the integrity of the bacterial cell membrane. This leads to increased permeability, leakage of cellular contents, and ultimately bacterial cell death. Polymyxin B is particularly effective against multidrug-resistant Gram-negative pathogens such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii.
