Kanamycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that targets the 30S subunit of bacterial ribosomes. It binds to the 16S rRNA, disrupting protein synthesis by causing misreading of the mRNA code and inhibiting the release of the initiation complex. This leads to the production of nonfunctional proteins and ultimately bacterial cell death. Kanamycin is effective against a wide range of Gram-negative and some Gram-positive bacteria, including Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonas species. Its specific interaction with the ribosome makes it a valuable target for antibody development to enhance its therapeutic efficacy and specificity in treating bacterial infections.
