Target Information

Avermectin is a macrocyclic lactone antibiotic that targets the nervous systems of parasites. It binds to glutamate-gated chloride channels in the neurons and muscle cells of nematodes and arthropods, increasing the permeability of these channels to chloride ions. This leads to hyperpolarization of the nerve and muscle cells, causing paralysis and death of the parasites. Avermectin is effective against a wide range of endoparasites and ectoparasites in livestock and pets. Its specific action on parasite nervous systems makes it a valuable target for antibody development to enhance detection and monitoring in veterinary medicine, supporting effective parasite control and animal health.
