Target Information
Levofloxacin is the S-enantiomer of the fluoroquinolone antibiotic ofloxacin and is significantly more potent. While primarily a cornerstone of human medicine for treating severe pneumonia and urinary tract infections, it is sometimes used off-label or illegally in veterinary practice to treat livestock and aquaculture. Its presence in animal-derived foods is a major safety concern because it is a "critically important antimicrobial." Residues in the food chain can accelerate the emergence of superbugs and cause allergic reactions. Due to these risks, many countries, including China and members of the EU, have strictly prohibited its use in food-producing animals.
