Target Information
Leishmania is a genus of obligate intracellular protozoan parasites transmitted by the bite of infected phlebotomine sandflies, causing visceral, cutaneous, or mucocutaneous leishmaniasis. The parasite alternates between flagellated extracellular promastigotes in the vector and non-motile intracellular amastigotes within mammalian macrophages. Key targets for diagnostics and therapeutics include lipophosphoglycan (LPG) and the surface metalloprotease gp63, which mediate macrophage binding and intracellular survival, alongside the kinetoplast DNA (kDNA) commonly used in molecular assays.
