Target Information
Leptin is a peptide hormone released from adipose tissue. The leptin function of horses mainly involves regulating energy balance, neuroendocrine responses, and its widespread impact on the physiological system. Leptin is a hormone secreted by adipocytes that plays a role in the brain through its receptor (Leptin Receptor, LepR) and regulates appetite, weight and energy consumption. Leptin maintains relative weight stability by acting on the hypothalamus to suppress appetite and increase energy expenditure. This action is achieved through a negative feedback mechanism. In a previous research, serum concentrations of leptin tended to be greater in fat-restricted mares than in thin-supplemented mares.
