Target Information
SLC6A4, also known as Serotonin Transporter (SERT), is a protein-coding gene that encodes the serotonin transporter. This transporter is responsible for reuptake of extracellular serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) into the presynaptic neuron. It plays a crucial role in regulating serotonin levels in the synaptic cleft. Bovine Sodium-Dependent Serotonin Transporter is encoded by the SLC6A4 gene in cattle. Prenatal stress, combined with the maternal polymorphism 5HTTLPR in the serotonin transporter SLC6A4, has been reported to increase the risk of children developing autism spectrum disorder.
