Mouse GDF6 is a secreted member of the TGF-beta superfamily characterized by conserved cysteine-knot domains supporting homodimer assembly. It maintains stable folded dimeric conformation and complete receptor-interacting motifs under physiological conditions, secreted by mesenchymal and skeletal cell populations into surrounding extracellular spaces. Its soluble dimeric architecture and cysteine-rich core structure set it apart from cytoplasmic metabolic enzymes, multi-transmembrane carriers and intranuclear regulatory proteins with simplified domain arrangements and restricted static subcellular localization profiles.
