Target Information
Glutamic acid is a five-carbon α-amino acid carrying a γ-carboxyl group that confers a net negative charge at physiological pH. The hydrophilic side chain extends 0.6 nm from the peptide backbone, enabling extensive hydrogen bonding and ionic interactions. In aqueous solution the molecule exists predominantly as the zwitterionic L-enantiomer, interconverting slowly to D-glutamate through racemization. Its planar γ-carboxylate participates in metal chelation and amide bond formation via glutamine synthetase. Antibodies generated against glutamate-protein conjugates recognize the free amino acid with minimal cross-reactivity to glutamine, aspartate or GABA, permitting direct detection of glutamate enrichment in fixed tissues and biological fluids.
