Target Information
Tumor protein 63 (TP63) functions as a transcriptional activator or repressor through sequence-specific DNA binding. Its isoforms possess different sets of transactivation and auto-regulating transactivation inhibiting domains, leading to isoform-specific activities. TP63 may be necessary, alongside TP73/p73, to initiate p53/TP53-dependent apoptosis in response to genotoxic stress and the presence of activated oncogenes. This protein is crucial for the development and differentiation of epithelial cells. Mice lacking TP63 exhibit severe developmental defects, including the absence of limbs, skin, and associated structures such as hair follicles and sweat glands. Additionally, TP63 is vital for the formation of the craniofacial region, limbs, and skin during embryonic development.
