Target Information
Obestatin is a 23-amino acid peptide hormone produced from the ghrelin gene, and in mice, it plays a role in several physiological processes such as energy balance, metabolic regulation, and the functioning of the gastrointestinal and endocrine systems. One of its significant functions is appetite suppression, as it is known to reduce food consumption by activating the GPR39 receptor and can lead to reduced weight gain when administered chronically over the long term. Obestatin significantly impacts gastrointestinal function, such as slowing the gastric emptying rate without affecting gastric contractions. Additionally, it influences gastrointestinal motility by altering the mechanical activity and electrophysiological properties of gastric smooth muscle. In metabolic regulation, obestatin is critical as it enhances insulin secretion, particularly in response to glucose, and helps prevent apoptosis and the inflammatory response in adipocytes through the activation of the AMPK signaling pathway.
