Target Information
Spiramycin is a macrolide antibiotic that targets the 50S subunit of bacterial ribosomes. It binds to the 23S rRNA, inhibiting protein synthesis by preventing the translocation of peptidyl-tRNA from the A site to the P site. This action halts the elongation of peptide chains and ultimately leads to bacterial cell death. Spiramycin is effective against a variety of Gram-positive and some Gram-negative bacteria, as well as mycoplasmas and chlamydiae. Its specific interaction with the ribosome makes it a promising target for antibody development to enhance its efficacy and specificity in treating infections caused by susceptible pathogens.
