Target Information
Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic widely used in veterinary medicine to treat bacterial infections in various food-producing animals, including cattle, pigs, and poultry. When these animals are treated with gentamicin, residues of the drug can remain in their tissues (like meat and organs) and milk. If these residues are not below established maximum residue limits (MRLs), they pose a food safety risk. The primary concerns for human health from consuming these residues are the potential for developing antibiotic-resistant bacteria and direct toxic effects, such as nephrotoxicity (kidney damage) and ototoxicity (hearing damage). Therefore, strict withdrawal periods are required after treating animals to ensure that the drug has been sufficiently cleared from their systems before they are processed for human consumption.
