Target Information
Quinolinic acid is a dicarboxylic pyridine derivative bearing a carboxyl group at positions 2 and 3 of the heteroaromatic ring, giving it a net negative charge at physiological pH. Generated within the kynurenine branch of tryptophan catabolism, the molecule accumulates in activated microglia and infiltrating macrophages where it functions as an endogenous N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor agonist. Its compact planar structure allows rapid diffusion across membranes, while the twin carboxylates confer water solubility and chelating capacity for divalent cations. Antibodies produced against quinolinic acid-protein conjugates selectively recognize the free acid with negligible binding to picolinic, kynurenic or other kynurenine pathway intermediates.
