Mouse VSNL1 is a small cytoplasmic calcium sensor protein carrying multiple conserved EF-hand calcium-binding motifs to sustain stable protein conformation under physiological conditions. It exhibits prominent enrichment in neuronal cell populations within the central and peripheral nervous systems. Its intracellular calcium-sensing multi-domain structure and neuron-restricted expression distinguish it from transmembrane cell surface receptors, secreted circulating signaling cytokines and chromatin-binding nuclear transcriptional regulators with simplified single-domain assemblies and ubiquitous expression across non-neural somatic tissues.
